Meditation books for kids
Can children learn about meditation? Sure they can! The books on this page are meant for pre-school children and kids in primary school. They make meditation and spirituality fun.
It’s not a good idea to make it all too heavy for them: you don’t want them rebelling later and forgetting about these options for a healthier and more balanced life. Instead you want them to acquire a skill they’ll be using throughout their lives. Don’t you?
Shown here is the popular: Moody Cow Meditates
Remember: the main point is for them to learn to be with what is – that emotional discipline will be the basis for all that follows.
Each Breath a Smile– For pre-school kids
Each Breath a Smile introduces kids age 4 through 8 to mindful breathing. Through cute color illustrations, kids learn to feel their breathing and experience calmness. The result will likely be that they’ll have deeper relationships with their friends and family. The pictures of nature remind them of the simple joys in the world around them.
With twenty-eight full-page color pictures by Nguyen Thi Hop and Nguyen Dong, this book has positive reviews from parents and teachers.

Moody Cow Meditates – For pre-school and elementary school kids
The real life story of a moody kid, in the shape of Peter the Cow who is having a bad day. He misses the buss, has a bike accident, and then loses his temper and gets in trouble. Not the most popular kid in school, the other kids and cows make fun of his anger, calling him “Moody Cow.”
Peter’s day just seems to get worse until grandpa comes over. He tries to teach him to settle his mind and let go of his frustration.
The reviews are mixed: some people feel that introducing kids to such emotions is a bad thing. However, let’s face it, they will come across such situation anyhow. Much better at home with parental explanation and a solution included. In fact, isn’t that the whole point of meditation: to face up to disturbing emotions, instead of hiding from them, in the knowledge that half the power of the negativities in our lives is precisely our fight against them?

Peaceful Piggy Meditation (Albert Whitman Prairie Books)– For kids age 4-8
The young piggies in this story book balance a busy life with regular meditation.
The book is really meant to teach meditation, so it’s a bit more ‘hard-core’ than the previous books on this page. As one reviewer reminds us: kids can usually not meditate for more than 10 minutes. Make sure to be accepting of kids who can’t manage full or even half lotus position and do help the children transition from meditation to ‘play mode’.
